Being familiar with bookkeeping of course is crucial, but you do not need to have a degree or special training to start a bookkeeping business. As long as you are efficient at using the bookkeeping software, can pay attention to details, be very accurate and are honest and dependable, you can start a home based bookkeeping business.
What Equipment Do I Need?
A computer is necessary to do a good job, you want a system that can do daily back-ups to protect your clients data. Bookkeeping software is also required to operate this business. You'll need a telephone, email address and possibley a fax line.
How Do I Get Started?
Do some research online to get an idea of what other business owners are offering. You'll want to have some business cards and flyers made up. Send a packet out to your local businesses to let them know what services you offer. A good idea is to join your local chamber of commerce or other networking groups and get involved with community events where you can meet business people and become known in your area. You could also place a local ad in your newspaper with a link to your website that details your services and lists your rates. If you do not know how to create your own website you can either hire someone to do this for you or there is a very easy site builder called Homestead you could try.
It may take some time to build this business, but keep marketing and eventually you'll find a client! Once you do, make sure to go the extra mile to ensure they are happy with your services, and they will recommend you to other business owners.
